Read for the Record is a campaign that is designed to bring attention to the importance of early childhood education. The goal of Read for the Record is for one million children to read the same book on the same day around the world. On October 8, 2009 Wilmer students helped set a world record by reading this year's feature book,
The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Employees from the Wal-Mart in Semmes came out to the school for a very special assembly. Store manager, Mr. Eubanks, read the story to Pre-K through 3
rd grade students. Other employees held up beautifully hand painted pictures from the story. One employee was even dressed as a beautiful butterfly. Wal-Mart employees also gave each child an apple at the end of the assembly! All 360 Wilmer students that read the story received an apple. Mrs. Wiggins, Library Media Specialist, went to the Read for the Record website and entered Wilmer's numbers so that we could be counted towards the record. In addition, many of our students took an AR quiz on
The Very Hungry Caterpillar and one of our 2
nd grade students, Ernie Keene, was inspired to decorate his pumpkin as a caterpillar for the "Great Pumpkin Contest" taking place at the school.
